Dental Applications of CBCT

Course Description:
This course will discuss the dental applications, advantages, and limitations of CBCT and will provide a systematic approach to interpret CBCT scans.
Course Objectives - Participants Will:
- Discuss the basic principles and dental applications of CBCT
- Understand the advantages and limitations of CBCT
- Review the cross-sectional anatomy of the head and neck region
- Practice a systematic approach to interpret CBCT scans
- Discuss the clinical significance and management protocol for the most common incidental findings on CBCT scans
Presenter:
Erika Benavides, DDS, PhD, Dip. ABOMR
Dr. Erika Benavides is a Clinical Professor and Associate Chair of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Radiology and the Director of the CBCT Service at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She is a Diplomate and Past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR). She also served as Councilor for Communications of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Chair of the Research and Technology Committee.
Dr. Benavides received her D.D.S. from the University of Valle in Cali, Colombia. She then completed an externship program in the Craniofacial Genetics Department at the Medical University of South Carolina. Subsequently, she completed a General Practice Residency (GPR) program at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) and the Truman Medical Center. At UMKC, she also received her Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology training and her interdisciplinary PhD in Oral Biology and Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Benavides is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and has published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in the multidisciplinary aspects of diagnostic imaging. She has been a co-investigator in NIH funded grants for the past 10 years and currently serves as the Chair of the expert panel to update the current ADA/FDA recommendations for dental radiography. Her clinical practice is dedicated to interpretation of 2D and 3D dentomaxillofacial imaging.
