Speaker Bio & Course Description:
Russ Howell is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) with decades of experience protecting businesses and healthcare practices from cyber threats. After early leadership roles in IT with Fortune 500 companies, Russ turned his focus to information security, advising dental and medical professionals across the Midwest on HIPAA compliance, risk management, and cyber defense. He’s also a national speaker for The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, dental societies, and study clubs nationwide.
With hands-on training alongside military and law enforcement teams, Russ brings a unique perspective... he doesn’t just study attackers, he thinks like one.
In this fast-paced session, Russ will reveal how cybercriminals target practices, plan attacks, and exploit weaknesses. Through real-world examples, you’ll see how phishing, social engineering, and fear-driven scams, including COVID-related fraud, cost dental professionals millions each year in losses, litigation, and fines.
More importantly, you’ll learn practical steps to safeguard your practice and build a culture of security that empowers your team rather than frightens them.
Step into the hacker’s shoes, see what they see, and leave prepared to outsmart them.
Course Objectives - Participants Will:
- Understand how attackers select, plan, and execute real-world cyberattacks against small to medium practices.
- Recognize common threats—including hacking, social engineering, and fear-based scams—and their financial and legal impact on dental professionals.
- Learn strategies to build a proactive culture of security that reduces risk without relying on fear.
